Austin Torgerson Secures First National Micro Win En Route to Sooner 600 Speedweek Championship

PETERSEN MEDIA- Heading east to take part in Sooner 600 Speedweek in Kansas and Oklahoma, Austin Torgerson showed out as he picked up his first Super 600 National win and backed it up with three additional top fives to claim the Speedweek championship.

Kicking the week festivities off on Wednesday night in Caney, KS, Torgerson timed his Safety-Kleen/C&K Towing backed No. 88 entry in fastest in his qualifying group.

Lining up in the second row of his heat race, the Glendale, AZ runner worked his way to a second place finish and put himself in the second row of the 25-lap feature event.

A very good start to the feature event saw Torgerson waste little time getting to the race lead. Taking the second position over on the second lap, Torgerson essentially made his race winning move on lap three as he stormed to the lead and never looked back.

Out in front, Torgerson hit his marks and ran a flawless feature as he got the week off to a great start and picked up his first national win in micro competition.

Thursday night the scene shifted to the ‘Sooner State’ as the Torgerson Racing team checked in at Creek County Speedway.

Timing in third fastest in his qualifying flight, Torgerson’s second place finish in heat race competition put him in the fourth row of the 25-lap finale.

Just as he did the previous night at Caney Valley Speedway, Torgerson was on the move early as he took over fifth on the fourth lap, and moved into third just before the halfway point on lap 11.

Spending a good chunk of the race in third, Torgerson found himself in second on the 19th circuit as he chased after Frank Flud. Flud had built up a sizeable advantage over the field and Torgerson settled for second at the checkered flag.

Friday night saw Sooner 600 Speedweek invade Red Dirt Raceway. Getting off to a slow start in time trials, Torgerson missed the inversion in his heat race group as his fifth quick effort lined him up fifth in his heat.

Returning to form in his heat, Torgerson had his elbows up as he forged his way ahead and tallied a second-place finish and then found himself on the front row of the 25-lapper as he looked for his second triumph of the week as he held the points lead after the first two rounds.

Jumping out to the early lead, Torgerson found himself in a torrid battle as he battled for the top spot with Chris Cochran.

Falling back to second on the 10th lap, Torgerson kept pace with the leader but also battled with Frank Flud as he took his shots at second on the running order.

With Flud getting the spot with four laps left in the race, Torgerson continued to hang tough despite losing the third position on the final lap as he closed the night with a fourth-place finish.

Saturday night brought the finale to the grueling week as Port City Raceway played host.

Heading into the night with the week-long points lead, Torgerson got off to a great start as he earned fast time honors to set the early tone.

Advancing from fourth to second in his heat race, Torgerson locked into the feature event as he was again on the front row of the 25-lapper.

Settling into fourth when the race went green, Torgerson slipped back to sixth on the 14th lap, but was quickly back inside the Top-Five a lap later.

Running in fifth, Torgerson continued to lead the point standings as the laps clicked down, and a move on lap 18 moved him into fourth and gave him a little more breathing room.

Finishing fourth, Torgerson indeed earned Sooner 600 Speedweek Championship honors as he picked up a win and four top-five’s during four nights of action.

ON TAP: Austin Torgerson will continue to remain in the Midwest this weekend as he will be at Southern Illinois Raceway this Thursday-Saturday for the High Banks Hustle.
